Abstract

Purpose: To evaluate density of alveolar bone of the maxilla and the mandible on DICOM images(V Implant software) and compare with the bone quality of during installed implant.

Materials & Methods: Thirty-three implant sites of thirteen patients were selected, and bone quality was measured with V implant imaging software(Cybermed, Seoul, Korea). Objective scale of the bone density based on the Hounsfield unit and evaluation of correlation between bone density value and subjective quality score when implant was installed.

Results: Mean density of Hounsfield unit of Upper anterior area was 266.3 HU, upper posterior area was 166.1 HU, lower anterior area was 462.1 HU, lower posterior area was 418.3 HU. Mean Hounsfield units according to bone quality was Q1-496.9 HU, Q2-306.25HU, Q3-184.14HU, Q4-37.0HU.

Conclusion: Measurement of Hounsfield unit can be helpful as a valuable supplement to bone density evaluation before implant installation.
